Apple Studio Display vs Asus 32” OLED 4k 240hz
In the ~$1500 price range, the main benefits of the Apple Studio Display over other displays for Mac users are:
- 5k resolution
- Nano-texture option
- Great speakers, and other features such as webcam, mic, true tone integration
However, it is 2 years old and things it lacks include:
- Only 27in as an option
- Only 60hz
- Only IPS and no OLED option for deeper blacks
I went out and got the ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDP which seemed like the best option on the market currently.
There’s ample testing and reviews of it, but here’s my thoughts on this comparison where I currently use it mainly for productivity but some light gaming:
- OLED is really nice for for dark mode. The deeper blacks in editors really makes it much easier on the eyes. I would always get OLED monitors going forward. I also never noticed but white text on a black background on an IPS panel actually looks more grey than white (possibly due to light bleed).
- The 120hz and fast pixel response times are very nice (it can go to 240hz on HDMI but I’m just using USB-C for now which is DP1.4 and limited to 4k 120hz) and makes animations much better. Similar to 120hz on iPhones, you can actually read the text as you scroll whereas on 60hz it will be blurry.
- 32in is hit or miss. I can live with it but I think I can also live without it. The main downside is it is a lot more bulky than 27in monitors when moving it and seems less necessary than the other two points.
- Bonus: OLED panels are so thin which gives it a cleaner feel. Unfortunately the dock on this monitor takes a lot of space, so it makes it hard to for example get a sound bar and place it under the monitor.
- Bonus: I am also glad I got the WOLED variant. There’s a QD-OLED variant that allegedly has more vibrant colors and overall looks better, but I am more often than not in a room with a window and this monitor does a much better job than even my matte Dell U2520D monitor at reducing reflections and glare.
All in all I am very happy with the monitor and would get it over the Apple Studio Display for mainly Mac usage any day mostly because of the 120hz+ and OLED.
